Ooops/GEMDAS
The rules for order of operations (ooops) in evaluating expressions are abbreviated GEMDAS:
G | Grouping symbols | ( ) [ ] | | and fraction bars |
---|---|---|
E | Exponentiation | 2³ |
MD | Multiplication and division | × · ÷ / |
AS | Addition and subtraction | + − |
All operations of equal priority go from left to right (actually there are exceptions to this which we will not worry about). Remember that multiplication and division have equal priority and addition and subtraction have equal priority. So for example:
5 - 3 + 4 -5
is computed as
[(5 - 3) + 4] - 5
Example
5 − [(4 + 2 · 2³) ÷ 10]
5 − [(4 + 2 · 8) ÷ 10]
5 − [(4 + 16) ÷ 10]
5 − [20 ÷ 10]
5 − 2
